Athletics South Africa's (ASA) track and field season will go ahead as planned after Yellow Pages agreed to a new deal at an ASA board meeting on Tuesday.

The contract is set to be signed at the ASA head office in Houghton on Wednesday afternoon.

"Yellow Pages representatives attended the ASA board meeting on Tuesday morning and the deal will be finalised on Wednesday," a senior athletics official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Sapa.

The track and field season had been in jeopardy after numerous problems affecting the federation had prevented the sponsor from signing a new contract after the previous deal ended last season.

Road running sponsors Nedbank also cut short a deal to fund the annual Matha Series races in October last year.

With ASA reportedly in financial crisis, there was a real possibility that the athletics season would have to be shortened, and with the track and field season scheduled to kick off at the end of January, there were fears it would be cancelled altogether.

A restructuring of the federation, however, which included the suspension of ASA president Leonard Chuene and his board, seems to have settled doubts the sponsors had held about the administrative issues within the federation.

The interim board, which took over in November, have managed to ease the sponsors' concerns, although Nedbank have yet to sign a new deal.

"They are not out the picture," the official said. "We are still in discussions with them."

There are minor changes to the original track and field fixtures set out by the suspended ASA board last year, with the revised schedule set to be announced on Wednesday.

"There are some minor adjustments," the official said, "but that is only so we can accommodate the Fifa World Cup which starts in June."
