If what Bafana Bafana dished out during the friendly against Namibia is what South Africans can expect during the World Cup then the host nation is in line for an early exit, writes iafrica.com's Khaya Ndubane.
Truthfully, Namibia were selected as a sacrificial lamb. A way for Bafana Bafana to celebrate the 100 days before the start of the World Cup, but as it turned out, the Namibians made the home side look ordinary.
Bafana simply failed to pitch up at the party. A celebration attended by thousands of soccer supporters at the new Moses Mabhida Stadium.
What was worrying about this game was the dip in form of star players Teko Modise and Simphiwe Tshabalala, two players considered to be carrying the team?s hopes at the World Cup.
Modise and Tshabalala play a large role in coach Carlos Alberto Parreira's plans and their form must be of concern to the Brazilian. But what is more worrying is the fact that Parreira does not seem to have a solution for the duo's lack of form.
In his post-match interview Parreira shifted the blame for Modise and Tshabalala's poor form to their respective club coaches, saying they are not playing them enough. Pirates coach Rudd Krol and Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic, meanwhile, blame Parreira, saying he refuses to rest the two players.
Regardless of how is right, however, the fact is that Modise and Tshabalala need to rediscover their form...and quickly.
Parreira, meanwhile, needs to sort his defence out as well because the Namibian goal came through of lack of concentration and poor marking at the back.
Bafana cannot afford to defend as they did against Namibia, and earlier Swaziland, because countries like Mexico, Uruguay and France ? all of who Bafana face in the World Cup ? will punish the host country dearly.
The likes of Diego Forlan and Thiery Henry ? deadly strikers in their own right ? will destroy Bafana if the hosts continue their slack defending during the World Cup.
Parreira does have time to sort this though, but that will depend on the players he selects for the World Cup, but one thing is for sure that captain Aaron Mokoena will be part of the Bafana defence.
One can only hope that Mokoena stops committing costly mistakes at the back and maybe Bafana will make all of us proud in the end.
