With tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and ICC Twenty20 (T20) trophy, T20 became very popular. The ever-growing developments in cricket have encouraged a new T20 brand which South Africa has invested in. This new T20 Global League will not only bring a new look to the local competition but will also attract new investors as it encourages economic growth for South Africa.
Excitement grew when the eight host cities and the owners of the new franchises were announced on Monday. In addition, the associated logo was also unveiled which depicts the African continent with particular emphasis on South Africa. According to CricketSA, this logo was designed in order to place South Africa as the global T20 cricket destination. Furthermore, it draws on the colours of an African sunrise, displaying hints of red over a golden glow.
Taking place in November, Sport24 reveals that two local owners are a part of the T20 Global League. It also came as no surprise that Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ franchise, expressed interest in this endeavour. His franchise will be based in Newlands and dubbed as the Cape Town Knight Riders.
As cited by CricketSA, CSA president, Chris Nenzani mentioned: “It is our duty to safeguard the future of the game. By backing a high-value tournament like the new T20 Global League, and investing in synergistic partnerships with key stakeholders, the T20 Global League is perfectly positioned to become an internationally successful sporting event.”
CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat touches on the dynamics of the tournament by saying, “Fans can look forward to epic game experiences, complimented by action-packed stadiums, big entertainment, top class broadcasters and accessible ticket prices… It’s now South Africa’s time to capitalise while reigniting and celebrating our love for the game.”
