Cape Town City owner John Comitis has announced plans to revamp and own Hartleyvale Stadium, yesterday at press conference.
The former Urban Warriors boss has been vocal about the club owning their very own stadium. He told reporters that they have finalized the process of owning the Hartleyvale grounds at a press conference held for the upcoming Ikapa derby clash against Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.
The club, formerly known as Mpumalanga Black Aces, relocated to the Mother City. The Citizens made their mark by claiming the 2016/17 Telkom Knockout title and finishing third on the Absa Premiership log.
The team, coached by Benni McCarthy, are gunning for league honours as they stand in third-place, only four points behind Mamelodi Sundowns.
"I have a signed lease in my hand, we are going full speed ahead," said Comitis.
The reason behind the decision Comitis says is "We want Capetonians to be the first city that can come and watch their team in the future at its own stadium with its own personal signature on it, so they feel part of something that they can see and touch.”
"That experience,” Comitis says “has eluded South African football and is the experience that rugby and cricket has had for many years. Hence, I think, it's the reason why a rugby event has so much social involvement with off-the-field hospitality and corporate involvement.”
Not having homes grounds proved to be a challenge for the team, City have had their fair share of venue issues. They have had to play a home games in Durban last month as of both Cape Town Stadium and Athlone Stadium.
Comitis says they plan to build a 10 000-seater stadium to create a real football experience for Capetownians and football fans.
Hartleyvale, which is usually used by the lower league sides will be officially owned by City, however Comitis says that they are prepared to help the clubs find a new venue to play their matches.
Comitis says plans are in place to improve the pitch so that the team’s training can take place. It will cost R200 000 to R300 000 to get the pitch to the level it needs to start playing any matches.
