Former Proteas spinner Paul Adams has retired from professional cricket.

Adams became the youngest South African to play Test cricket when he was called up in to the national side in the 1995/96 home series against England — after playing just five first-class matches for Western Province.

His unorthodox style made him difficult to read at first glance, as he took 31 wickets in his first three series' — averaging 25 runs per wicket.

As batsman grew used to his novel 'frog-in-a-blender style' of bowling, however, his figures deteriorated and his international appearances grew less and less.

Several injuries and the propensity to bowl bad balls curtailed his career further, with Adams forced to apply his trade in the second tier of domestic cricket during the latter stages of his career.

He did, however, feature sporadically for the Cobras — the franchise based in Cape Town — even playing some 20/20 games for them last season.

Adams finished with 134 Test wickets at 32.87, along with 412 first-class wickets at 32.66 runs per wicket.
