Hashim Amla starred for South Africa with a century against Western Australia in the Proteas' first warm-up match Down Under, but an injury to Morné Morkel threw a potential spanner into the works for the visitors.

Although the Proteas lost the 50-over fixture, certain players got some time in the middle they so desperately needed.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first, but lost the wickets of openers Neil McKenzie (4) and JP Duminy (16) in quick succession.

Amla and Kallis (52 not out) started out cautiously, but played more fluently as they got used to the conditions, eventually seeing South Africa to lacklustre 185/2 from their 50 overs.

Amla was particularly impressive, stroking 15 boundaries in his unbeaten innings of 105 from just 118 balls.

Western Australia successively chased down the target and even batted on after surpassing the visitors' score, reaching 215/4 from their 50 overs. The result was almost irrelevant, however, as the fixture was all about match practice for the South Africans.

Makhaya Ntini bowled 10 overs without success (0/30), while Monde Zondeki (1/46), Robin Peterson (1/73) and Duminy (1/44) each claimed a wicket.

Left-arm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe was the pick of the bowlers with impressive figures of 1/12 from his 10 overs.

Morkel hurt his ankle as he was about to bowl his first delivery, but the injury is not believed to be serious enough to jeopardize his place in the starting XI of Wednesday's first Test at the Waca.

Captain Graeme Smith and star bowler Dale Steyn sat the match out as a precaution, but both are expected to play in Friday’s second warm-up match.
