The Proteas will head into the first Test against Australia at the WACA on Wednesday in a confident mood after a strong showing against Western Australia at the same venue on Saturday.
South Africa's batsmen had a productive opening day on Friday; with AB de Villiers scoring a century, while top-order stars Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla chipped in with half-centuries as the Proteas scored 320/8 in their 90 overs. The visitors initially struggled as they were reduced to 29/2 after Smith (12) and Ashwell Prince (10) were dismissed cheaply. However, a 124-run stand between McKenzie and De Villiers put the South Africans back on track. And on Saturday, the bowlers followed suit with Dale Steyn making his return from a slight hamstring injury to pick up two wickets, while left-arm spinner Paul Harris ? making his return from a thumb injury ? claimed 4 for 94. Morne Morkel also enjoyed some valuable time on the park, bowling 11 overs and picking up the wicket of Justin Coetzee for 12. Veteran seamer Makhaya Ntini also captured a wicket. Rookie left-arm pace bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe continued to impress for the South Africans after picking up two wickets for the tourists. "You can never match the intensity of a Test match in a warm-up game," said Proteas captain Graeme Smith on the official CSA website. "What we did achieve was to put a good base in place and work on our gameplans for the battles ahead." Smith missed his team's opening tour match earlier this week, along with Steyn and Harris, with Morkel hurting his ankle in the Proteas' tour opener. Veteran wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has a mild medial ligament sprain of the left ankle, with AB de Villiers taking over the gloves on Saturday. The SA captain, however, dismissed all injury concerns in the squad, saying: "We should have a totally fit squad available for selection."
