Cobras captain Andrew Puttick hit the first century of the Twenty20 Champions League to lead his side to an easy 54-run win over the Otago Volts in Hyderabad.
Otago captain Craig Cumming won the toss on Saturday morning and decided to take the field first.
It seemed like a justified decision when English medium-pacer Dimitri Mascarenhas removed opener Herschelle Gibbs (1) in his first over and then Henry Davids (12) in his third.
From the outset though, Puttick played fluently all round the wicket, whilst new batsman JP Duminy (32) turned over the strike well.
The Volts seemingly opened a window of opportunity when Duminy fell to Ian Butler in the 16th over and pinch-hitter Rory Kleinveldt (1) was caught five deliveries later.
Justin Ontong strode to the wicket and helped finish the innings in style.
The classy right-hander clobbered four sixes and two fours in a brisk innings off 39 off a 14 balls.
His cameo came at a crucial time of the innings and helped Puttick reach his century as the Cobras posted a massive 193, with Puttick ending on an unbeaten 104 off 62 deliveries.
The Volts chase began well with Brendon McCullum and Aaron Redmond putting on 33 for the opening wicket in quick time.
But the innings fell apart when Redmond (14) was removed by Kleindveldt and McCullum (21) was run out inside the batting powerplay.
The other McCullum, Nathan (38) top scored for the Volts, but with the fall of regular wickets and a rising required run-rate, it was a bridge to far for the team from New Zealand as they crumbled to 139, handing the Cobras a 54-run victory.
