Records fly as Eagles soar
Sat, 31 Oct 2009 12:00
Morne van Wyk broke two domestic limited overs records as the
Diamond Eagles defeated the Lions by 104 runs in their MTN40 match
at the OUTsurance Oval in Bloemfontein.
Van Wyk (168*) recorded his tenth century of his domestic
limited overs career becoming the first batsman in the history of
South African domestic limited overs cricket to reach this
milestone. Five of his centuries came against the Lions/Gauteng.
His unbeaten 168 runs are also the highest innings ever in this
form of the game at domestic level. The former record of 166* stood
behind the name of Martin Venter for North West against Natal at
Fochville. Venter played his innings in the 1997/98 season - more
than a decade ago. Van Wyk and Mike Rindel jointly held the record
for the most centuries before the match.
Van Wyk struck 25 fours and a solitary six in his innings to
help the Diamond Eagles to 286/5 in their allotted 40 overs. The
third highest innings in the competition also stands behind the
name of Van Wyk. He scored an unbeaten 166 runs against the
Dolphins during the 2006/07-season in Kimberley.
Captain Boeta Dippenaar (36) and Van Wyk shared a 96-run
partnership between them for the fourth wicket. Reeza Hendricks
(22) and Van Wyk shared an opening partnership of 80 runs between
them. Rilee Rossouw (26) and Johan van der Wath (21) also made
mentionable contribution towards the home side's cause.
Aaron Phangiso (2/54) was the best bowler for the Lions. He also
managed to slow down the run rate a bit with his spin bowling.
The home side restricted the Lions to 182 bowling them out in
35.1 overs. This was the visitors second defeat after losing the
opening match of the MTN40 competition against the Cape Cobras
earlier in the week.
Alan Kruger (2/7) wrapped up the Lions' innings when he
rearranged Andre Nel's (5) stumps. His other scalp was Dane Vilas
(7).
Lions' captain, Neil McKenzie (53), was the only batsman of the
visitors who managed to frustrate the Eagles. Jean Symes (34) and
Vaughan van Jaarsveld (32) also weighed in. Johan van der Wath
(3/36) was the best bowler for the Eagles in his first match back
at the franchise. Ryan McLaren (2/38) and CJ de Villiers (2/29)
both took two wickets.
The Eagles will lock horns with the Titans on Sunday in their
second match of the competition.
