Uncapped Warriors fast bowler Rusty Theron and Cobras all-rounder Justin Kemp have been included in the provisional Proteas squad of 18 players to take part in the ICC World Twenty20 to be played in the West Indies next month.
Theron - the only uncapped player in the squad - was one of the key performers in the Warriors' best-ever domestic season during which they won the inaugural MTN40 and the Standard Bank Pro 20 titles.
Apart from Kemp, who last represented South Africa on the 2007 tour of Pakistan, the squad also includes Cobras all-rounder Vernon Philander.
Three players will be cut from the group of 18 when Cricket South Africa (CSA) announces the final 15-man squad on 30 March 2010.
CSA have also named the Test and One Day International squads for the upcoming tour of the West Indies in May and June that immediately follows the World T20.
There were no changes made to the Test squad from the one that recently toured India, but the ODI squad does look a little different
Captain Graeme Smith returns to the squad at the expense of the underperforming Herschelle Gibbs, whilst the dependable Ryan McLaren has been preferred to the big-hitting Albie Morkel.
"Our aim at the moment is to build formidable squads both for the approaching World Twenty20 as well as for the World Cup next year," Proteas coach Corrie van Zyl said in a statement to the press.
"An important part of this is to achieve consistency on the field and an important contribution to that will be to be consistent in the selection process as well.
"This may involve changing the starting XI as we play against different opponents under differing conditions.
"The door is not closed on any individual as far as future selection is concerned, but we believe that the combinations we have are the best to suit our purposes at the moment," Van Zyl - who was involved in the selection process for the first time - concluded.
