The Nashua Cape Cobras beat the Nashua Dolphins by 38 runs in a rain-affected Standard Bank Pro20 semifinal second-leg at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Sunday.

After being put into bat by the Dolphins the Cobras amassed 191 for four with Herschelle Gibbs scoring 92 off 57 balls.

In reply the Dolphins could only muster 59 for five after nine overs before rain brought play to an end.

The Duckworth/Lewis system meant that the Dolphins needed to have scored 97 runs during the nine overs that they were at the crease as the Cobras clinched a comfortable victory.

Gibbs began playing extravagant shots from the moment he came to the wicket and, after reaching his 50 off 40 balls, he needed only 17 balls for his next 42 runs.

Gibbs was eventually bowled by seamer Alfonso Thomas in the last over of the Cobras’ innings for a knock that included seven fours and four sixes.

The Cobras raced to 66 in seven overs thanks to Gibbs and Graeme Smith.

Smith made his way to 33 off 20 balls before he was caught at mid-wicket by Ahmed Amla off the bowling of seamer Johann Louw.

Gibbs and Justin Ontong then added a healthy 74 runs off 51 balls for the third-wicket before Ontong was bowled by Thomas for 32.

Thomas was the Dolphins most successful bowler capturing two for 28.

The Dolphins reply got off to a poor start as they lost the wicket of Sanath Jayasuriya in the first over.

Hashim Amla (23) and HD Ackerman (16) put on 33 runs for the second wicket before the Dolphins lost four wickets for 19 runs.

Seamer Roger Telemachus took two for eight off two overs while left-arm spinner Claude Henderson picked up two for 13 in two overs.

The two teams will now meet in Durban on Wednesday in the deciding game after the Dolphins won the first match of the best of three series.
