A half-century from Herschelle Gibbs and three wickets from Charl Langeveldt laid the platform for a 22-run win for the Nashua Cape Cobras over the Gestetner Diamond Eagles in the Standard Bank Pro20 final at Sahara Park Newlands on Saturday.

After the Cobras had won the toss and elected to bat Gibbs struck 87 not out off 62 balls with seven fours and four sixes to see the Cobras to 147 for five before seamer Langeveldt took three for 20 off four overs to restrict the Eagles to 125 for eight.

Gibbs was particularly effective during the last two overs of the Cobras innings as he clubbed 24 runs during the period to give the Cobras? total an air of respectability.

A 40-run third-wicket stand, off 37 balls, between Gibbs and Justin Ontong (21) gave the Cobras? innings some impetus before Ontong was caught at mid-off by Ryan Bailey off left-arm spinner Dean Elgar.

Gibbs then marshalled the strike as he, almost single-handedly, helped the Cobras to a competitive total with Ontong and Duminy (13) being the only other batsmen to reach double figures.

Seamer Shadley van Schalkwyk was the pick of the Eagles bowlers with two for 24 off four overs while left-arm swing bowler Jandre Coetzee finished with two for 29 from his four overs.

In reply Dean Elgar top-scored for the Eagles with 34 off 30 balls before he pulled a delivery from seamer Vernon Philander to Langeveldt at mid-wicket to leave the Eagles on 88 for five in the 15th over.

Dillon du Preez struck some lusty blows for the Eagles in making his way to 26 off 16 balls and he was still at the crease at the start of the penultimate over of the Eagles innings with the visitors needing 31 runs off 12 balls.

Langeveldt then took two wickets in two balls, including that of Du Preez, to effectively end the Eagles challenge.

Philander provided good support for Langeveldt as he captured three for 17 off three overs.
