The Proteas shook of their lingering hoodoo in Australia on Sunday with a record-setting chase against Australia at the WACA in Perth. We rate the Proteas after arguably their greatest performance!
Neil McKenzie: The only real failure in the Proteas batting line-up, McKenzie will be desperately disappointed in his performance, but expect him to bounce back in Melbourne. 2/10 Graeme Smith: He would have been disappointed to get out after a start in the first innings, but he more than made up for it with a captain?s knock in the second! His ton set the tone for the run-chase and SA fans will be desperate for him to be fit for Melbourne. 8/10 Hashim Amla: The Proteas number three continued his good form with the bat and his partnerships with Smith in both innings proved a cornerstone of the Proteas batting card, but he would have been disappointed not to turn either into a ton. He is simply getting better and better. 7/10 Jacques Kallis: The veteran all-rounder made a timely return to form with the bat, notching up two half-centuries, and delivering with the ball as well. Questions have been asked regarding his form against Australia, and he answered them all with aplomb. 8/10 AB de Villiers: The official, and our, Man of the Match, De Villiers played a great knock in the first innings and followed it up with a career-defining one in the second. He has grown into an awesome force in world cricket and even bagged a couple of sublime catches for good measure. 9/10 JP Duminy: The debutant got a roughie in the first innings, but he followed it up with a spectacular half-century under enormous pressure. After a long wait he finally got his chance through an Ashwell Prince injury and he showed he has the class to take the step up. 7/10 Mark Boucher: A gritty knock in the first innings did a lot to keep the South Africans in it and he did a solid job behind the stumps. 6/10 Morne Morkel: The lanky fast bowler is slowly starting to show signs of a return to form, but still tends to drift a bit. Not much in the way of wickets, but he kept the Aussie batsmen quiet in their second innings. 6/10 Paul Harris: He was widely regarded as the weak link in the Proteas side, but Harris answered his critics in style, picking up five wickets in the match on a pitch offering very little for the spinners. 6/10 Dale Steyn: The ICC Test Player of the Year did not live up to his billing at the WACA and his four-wicket return from the Test will not be pleasing for the fiery fast bowler. 5/10 Makhaya Ntini: The veteran Proteas seamer was the star bowler of the first innings with four wickets, but like the rest of the SA bowlers struggled to knock over the Australian tail. 6/10
