Lyons 'pretty close to 100 per cent'

Wallaby powerhouse David Lyons completed his first full contact session in over a month after recently being cleared by doctors to play in the 2007 World Cup.

Speaking to the press after the session, Lyons - who was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis of the calf five weeks ago - was happy to report that "all was well".

"Everything's pretty close to 100 per cent now, we had a full contact training session this morning and everything was fine."

The veteran loose forward, a member of the Wallabies' 2003 RWC team, added: "It was the first full-on 100 per cent contact I've done and we always knew it was going to be no worries, but it was just good to actually do it."

With the joys of his first contact session still fresh in his mind, Lyons - who is taking the blood-thinning agent Clexane as he continues his fight against DTV, which could come back to haunt him at a later stage - is keen to focus his attention on reclaiming the Wallabies No.8 shirt in time for his country's RWC opener against Japan on September 8.

"Obviously there's a lot of competition in the No.8 spot, but I'll just wait for my opportunity and once I do get an opportunity I'm pretty confident that I can do a good job and try and cement the starting spot," said the Waratahs star.

"After playing the last World Cup I'm pretty confident if I get a chance I can do well."

The Wallabies have had an indifferent few seasons since losing in the 2003 World Cup Final to England, but Lyons was happy to report that the two-times RWC champions were in fine fettle ahead of the 2007 event, with any possible talk of 2003 a thing of the past.

"There's been a little bit of talk about the last World Cup and losing in the final, but I think that's behind us a bit now," he said.

"The main job is to get to that position again. But there's a long way to get to that position yet."

Viv Richards was the most feared batsman of his generation and during the 1979 World Cup Final his unbeaten innings of 138 was instrumental in the West Indies defending their title.
