Vaughan happy with strong summer start

Michael Vaughan backed England to follow up their 3-0 Test success over West Indies with further victory in the forthcoming one-day matches.

England bowled out their opponents for 222 at the fourth Test at the Riverside today to set up a comfortable seven-wicket success.

Vaughan finished unbeaten on 48 but will now return for a spell in county cricket after announcing yesterday that he would give up the one-day captaincy.

Vaughan said on Sky Sports 1: "I firmly believe it was the right decision for the team.

"I really believe a new captain at the helm in that form of the game is what the team needs.

"We won 3-0 and now we can look forward to the remainder of the summer. We have a great chance of winning the one-day series and then the Indians arrive."

Vaughan had previously stated that he does not believe England should have two captains.

He added: "It is not ideal but that is the decision we have come to, it is best for the team.

"But I am fully committed to being Test captain for as long as the team need me."

Vaughan feels England have made good progress since their dismal winter.

He added: "It was not a good winter but we look forward.

"We have improved but you can never tell until you play more cricket. Winning becomes a habit and we have got a winning streak now."

Monty Panesar, who took five for 46 today, was named England's man of the series, largely thanks to his 10 wickets at Old Trafford.

The Northamptonshire spinner said, however, he does not believe he is guaranteed his England place in either format of the game.

"I've still got a long way to go for that," he added on Sky Sports.

"It's been an unbelievable series, the four Tests and taking 23 wickets. I feel quite lucky with the way things have gone.

"We're pleased with our performances."

West Indies captain Daren Ganga admitted his side had not performed well enough over the series.

"There was a lack of consistency that we probably wanted in this series and unfortunately we just fell short in this Test match,'' he said on Sky Sports.

"The effort from these guys is tremendous, I must single out Shiv Chanderpaul for the way he batted.

"I think we didn't have the consistency in all the departments of our game to string together a win.''

With his side having failed to win a Test match for two years, Ganga added: "Winning is a habit and if you get into a rut, it's very difficult to come out of it. We've got to keep plugging away.

"The guys have the effort and enthusiasm to do well in the one-day series.''

Chanderpaul, who scored 446 runs in the series, was easily the Windies'

outstanding player, though his team-mates never really matched his performances on the pitch.

The tourists' man of the series said: "The guys tried hard. It wasn't easy out there, the ball was swinging a lot.

"It was hard work but we will pick ourselves up and come back fighting.''

Regarding his own performances with the bat, Chanderpaul said: "It's down to hard work and all those net sessions, every opportunity to go and do a lot of extra batting. I guess it's practice.''

With the Twenty20 and one-day internationals to come, Chanderpaul said: "We've got some new guys, some fresh legs and guys ready to work and they want to win some games.''
