Michael Vaughan hopes his replacement as one-day captain can end England's wait for success.
The 32-year-old Yorkshire batsman knows from experience how split captaincy can put unnecessary pressure on the Test skipper having fulfilled a similar role back in 2003. Vaughan guided England to success in the triangular tournament against South Africa and Zimbabwe that year having taken over from Nasser Hussain. He then quickly found the Test job had also become available as Hussain resigned one match later believing the team had moved on without him. Now he is in the same situation himself, having resigned as one-day captain and he knows his successor could put his job under pressure, just as he did unintentionally to Hussain. "It's interesting," conceded Vaughan. "It hasn't worked in the past and is it going to work now? I'm very confident that it can work with the personnel we have, but let's just wait and see. "I also know that if the new captain comes in and does a magnificent job then that's the end of MV (in ODIs) and that's just the way it happens. "We've never been a good one-day team. All right, we got to the (World Cup) final in 1992, but we've never won anything and we've got to start winning and hopefully he can lead us to some success." The identity of Vaughan's successor will be revealed alongside the one-day squad on Friday for the following week's two Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals against West Indies. He has given his views to chairman of selectors David Graveney and coach Peter Moores and believes all the leading candidates - Paul Collingwood, Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Strauss - would be good appointments. "I don't know who they will go for, but I do know it is the right time for someone else to take it forward and I wish them all the best luck in the world," stressed Vaughan, who has failed to score a century in 86 one-day international appearances for England. "I know I said split captaincy probably wouldn't work but if it's going to work it's going to work with someone like me because I'm pretty chilled, I do it in a different manner to a lot of other people and I'm very committed to continuing as the Test captain as long as the team want me. "I don't have any worries about the decision I've made because I believe it's the right thing for the English game and for English cricket to move forward." Vaughan has refused to retire completely from one-day international cricket but does not expect to be named in Friday's squad and accepts it is a "long shot" he will be chosen again. He said: "I think the best thing for the team is for me not to play for a while and if my body's fine and if I'm playing well then who's to say I won't come back into the one-day series, but I know I have to go away and play very, very well because my one-day record is not that good."
