Fleming delight at Black Caps form

Brendon McCullum hit the fastest half-century in World Cup history as New Zealand's batting clicked once again against Canada at Beausejour.

McCullum beat fellow wicketkeeper Mark Boucher's 21-ball effort off the Holland attack last week by one delivery, hitting five sixes in a blistering late assault which propelled the Black Caps to an imposing 363 for five.

The 25-year-old put on 85 undefeated runs in just seven overs with Jacob Oram, who cleared the rope three times himself.

"A couple of times now we have done some hard work at the top and been able to cash in at the end," said captain Stephen Fleming.

"Each time we do it we are getting more comfortable with how it needs to be done."

On a day of fast scoring, Canada captain John Davison also bowed out of the competition with a bang, hitting nine fours and a six in getting to 50 off 23 deliveries.

New Zealand opener Lou Vincent rediscovered some form to hit a hundred, having registered ducks in his previous two Group C matches.

Former Worcestershire batsman Vincent, 28, sealed his place in the Black Caps' 15-man squad with four half-centuries in five knocks upon his recall in late January and showed a semblance of that touch against one of the World Cup minnows.

Yesterday he got off the mark with a six over extra-cover off Anderson Cummins and formed the backbone of the innings in a 142-run stand with Fleming, who contributed 66.

"I had not enjoyed the start of the trip too much, sitting and watching the boys,

so it was nice to get some runs," Vincent said.

"When you have missed out a few times it's natural to feel like you are not very good but the season I have had means there is a lot of confidence with my game at the moment and I knew if I hung in there it would come good."

Davison set a frantic pace in Canada's response, launching a delivery from Daryl Tuffey into the stand at midwicket in an opening over which cost 14 runs.

But from a position of 188 for two in the 35th over Canada lost their next four wickets for 17 runs and had to settle for recording their highest World Cup score (249) for the second time in as many games, following their efforts in the 51-run loss to England.

"We came here with some different milestones to achieve than the big boys," said coach Andy Pick.

"We were looking to put some statistics on the board.

"We have managed some good scores against England and New Zealand - and that was the sort of thing we were trying to achieve. We now expect to get 200 even against the Test teams."
