Kent director of cricket Graham Ford is to travel to India to discuss his possible role as their new coach.

Ford, contracted with Kent until the end of next summer, is thought to be a front-runner to take the India vacancy in time for their tour of England, which starts next month.

The 46-year-old South African has voiced his thanks to his current employers for allowing him to pursue his interest in the India job.

Kent currently stand at the top of the Friends Provident Trophy South Conference table and are also hoping for a title push in the County Championship.

Former South Africa coach Ford said: "I'm really enjoying my time at Kent and particularly the team's recent success.

"The Indian board have approached me in regard to their vacancy, and I'm grateful to the club for allowing me the chance to talk to them."

The role of India coach became available after Greg Chappell quit following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Kent chief executive Paul Millman is still hoping Ford remains at Canterbury.

"Graham has a contract with Kent County Cricket Club until the end of the 2008 season," he noted.

"He has been approached by the BCCI about the job with the Indian national team, and we have allowed him the opportunity to travel to India to find out more about the role.

"Graham has done a fantastic job for us during his time at Kent - and needless to say, we very much hope he will stay with the club."

Ford is up against former England off-spinner John Emburey for the India

position.

2003 - World Cup forfeits benefit Kenya

Due to England and New Zealand's refusing to travel to Zimbabwe and Kenya respectively, both Kenya and Zimbabwe progressed to the Super Sixes stage, with the Kenyans even making the last four - ahead of the likes of South Africa, Pakistan and England.
