Tikolo calls for Kenya to raise game

Kenya captain Steve Tikolo has called on the 2003 World Cup semi-finalists to raise their standards against England on Saturday.

The Kenyans were hammered by 148 runs as New Zealand progressed to the Super Eight phase yesterday but hope to follow the same route travelled by their conquerors.

Whichever team wins the final Group C contest at Beausejour will head to Guyana for the second stage.

"We will have to try to improve on what we did wrong in this past game, our fielding was not up to the mark and the running between the wickets was not as good as it should be," said Tikolo. "And up front we need to get a start.

"Our chances are good if we do the basics right. All teams are here in this competition to win their matches."

They will play on the same surface on which the Black Caps stacked up 331 for seven.

"This had more bounce in it, it didn't turn as much as the one we played on against Canada," said Tikolo, whose side contains three frontline spinners.

For a few of the Kenyans Saturday's contest could be their final appearance in a World Cup, with Tikolo, 35, and Ravi Shah, a year his junior and top scorer with 71 against New Zealand, in that category.

"He batted well, that's a positive for us going into the next game," Tikolo said of Shah.

"If your main batsman can get runs that is a plus, so confidence-wise that is good for us."

1983 - Kapil Dev smashes Zimbabwe

It was somewhat of a surprise when a young Kapil Dev was appointed as captain of a struggling Indian side shortly before the 1983 World Cup.
