Inzamam: We went through hell
2007-06-14 13:49:00

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has admitted the days following Bob Woolmer's death were "the hardest of his life".

Pakistan coach Woolmer was found dead in his Jamaican hotel room on March 18, the morning after his side lost to Ireland in the World Cup, with an initial pathology report claiming the 58-year-old had been murdered.

Although that conclusion has now been dismissed - a second report has confirmed Woolmer died of natural causes - the suggestion that foul play had played a part led to the Pakistan party being quizzed by Caribbean police before they left for home.

Inzamam was relieved the initial verdict was proved to be incorrect.

"I am pleased to hear that Bob was not murdered, all the boys will feel the same as I'm sure his family will also. But this verdict will never take away one of the toughest periods in our lives. It was a nightmare," he told www.bigstarcricket.com.

"Those final 10 days in the Caribbean were the hardest of my life. We went through hell.

"It was hard and painful enough to lose a good friend like Bob as he was a great human being but to then be caught up in a murder investigation was very, very difficult for all of us. And as captain I probably felt the pressure most.

"I was one of the few who saw Bob lying in his room and it was very upsetting. We had become close as captain and coach over the three years he had spent with the Pakistan team.

"We felt at times as though people were pointing the finger at us and that was not fair. It was unbelievable, not right."

Pakistan Cricket Board chief Nasim Ashraf is another relieved that murder has now been ruled out.

He told The News newspaper: "The chapter of Woolmer's death is closed and we feel it's time to move on.

"There was a lot of unhealthy speculation about the cause of his death over the last few months, none of which eased the pressure.

"We fully co-operated with the authorities so that the truth comes out in the case, (we) sent our diplomats and investigators to help them and we are now glad that the true findings have come out."
