Watson set for Scotland captaincy
2007-03-23 12:20:00

Ryan Watson is expected to be appointed Scotland's new cricket captain after Craig Wright quit the post after a dismal World Cup campaign.

Scotland hoped to at least beat Holland in their group matches, but after heavy defeats to Australia and South Africa, another punishing setback was inflicted by the Dutch in St Kitts on Thursday.

Wright resigned after the eight-wicket defeat, and Cricket Scotland chief executive Roddy Smith told The Scotsman: "I can't see anyone other than Ryan Watson becoming captain. I think Ryan will be at the forefront of the selectors' thoughts."

Watson stood in during the World Cup campaign when Wright flew home after a family bereavement, leading the team against South Africa.

However Wright returned in time to face Holland, and after the heavy defeat declared: "I felt it was the right time to give someone else an opportunity to make their mark."
