What the Experts say
Allan Donald on...

The Proteas squad:
"It's a very well-balanced squad with great depth. They have a lot of momentum and there is every chance that they could go a very long way in the tournament."

South Africa's key men:
"The usual suspects - Graeme Smith's aggressive batting up front - he will once again attempt to dominate the bowlers, and it is vital for South Africa that he gets quick runs at the top of the order. Shaun Pollock, with the new ball, is another key man."

Other favourites:
"Australia must not be written off - they are a very dangerous unit. An outside bet would be... New Zealand. They are gaining momentum at the right time and their confidence is high."

Stars to watch:
"Herschelle Gibbs owes the Proteas a few big scores. He is definitely one to watch at this World Cup."

Conditions:
"I have it from reliable sources that the newly-laid wickets are surprisingly pacy and should also give good bounce. The cricketing world is holding its breath that this holds true, and that the wickets will produce even bounce in order to support a good tussle between bat and ball."

South Africa's greatest and most athletic modern-day fast bowler, Donald played 72 Tests and 164 ODIs for SA, picking up a total of 602 international wickets. Donald is currently dabbling in commentating and coaching in South Africa - but he has all the makings of a top-notch fast bowling mentor at the highest level.
