Key Moments
1983 - Kapil Dev smashes Zimbabwe

It was somewhat of a surprise when a young Kapil Dev was appointed as captain of a struggling Indian side shortly before the 1983 World Cup.

His remarkable unbeaten innings of 175 against Zimbabwe, however, sparked the belief that the eventual champions were indeed a threat to the power of the West Indies.

India were reduced to 17/5, but with Dev at the wicket it was carnage - his 138-ball innings included 22 boundaries, of which six were the maximum.

Zimbabwe never recovered and India continued this good form throughout the tournament, beating - or rather, shocking - the West Indies by 43 runs in the final.
