Key Moments
1992 - Pakistan's group win over New Zealand

Innovative co-hosts New Zealand were the frontrunners during the group stage of the 1992 event, winning their first seven games, including a demolition job of newboys South Africa.

Pakistan, on the other hand, needed a victory from their last fixture to ensure a semi-final berth.

A marvellous bowling display by Wasim Akram reduced the Kiwis to 166, 'the Sultan of Swing' taking 4/32.

The eventual winners had little trouble in chasing the small total down, booking their place in the semi-finals in the process and again beating New Zealand en route to the final.

KEY SA MOMENTS:

(1) That dive by Jonty: SA posted a modest 211 in their crucial group game against Pakistan, but after a rain interruption, the target was revised to 194 off 36 overs.

At 135/2, Pakistan's chase was well on target, until SA's star fielder Jonty Rhodes effected the most-publicised run out ever. A then agile (!) Inzamam-ul-Haq set off for a run, but was sent back by his skipper Imran Khan. Rhodes picked up the ball at cover point and ran towards the stumps, diving full-length to dislodge the bails with an outstretched arm, running out Inzy for 48.

The by now infamous Pakistani collapse was triggered, the eventual winners ending on 173/8, 21 runs short of the target, as debutants SA stayed alive and eventually qualified for the semi-finals.

(2) Twenty-two runs off one ball: After a rain delay, the semi-final between SA and England at the SCG was reduced to 45 overs. England reached 252 off their allotment, with Graham Hick (83) top-scoring.

With South needing a very gettable 22 off the last 13 deliveries (with Dave Richardson and Brian McMillan at the wicket), rain set in once more.

When play resumed, due to the rain-delay system that was used at that time, the target was not adjusted even though two overs were subtracted, leaving SA to score 22 off the last ball.
