Ryan Sidebottom bagged a maiden five-wicket haul in Tests as West Indies posted 287 in their first innings of the fourth Test in Durham.
Left-armer Sidebottom claimed five for 88 as England once again dismantled the tourists' tail. Only resistance from number 11 Corey Collymore (13) held things up in conjunction with the in-form Shivnarine Chanderpaul (136no) as the tourists were all out for 287 at tea. An horrific first-innings collapse at Old Trafford last week - when six wickets went for 13 runs - effectively handed England an unassailable 2-0 series lead. It was Chanderpaul's continued good form which held the Windies together as he constructed his second successive hundred, and 16th of his Test career. Left-hander Chanderpaul, whose Test career began with four half-centuries in as many outings against England, got to his landmark alongside last man Collymore when he cracked a 14th boundary, a ferocious cut off Steve Harmison. Nottinghamshire's Sidebottom, playing in his fourth Test, made a crucial breakthrough just before lunch on the third day as Marlon Samuels was bowled around his legs. Three successes in four overs left the innings on the brink of termination as Sidebottom accounted for Denesh Ramdin and Fidel Edwards either side of Daren Powell skying a Harmison bouncer. Monty Panesar wrapped up the innings when he trapped Collymore lbw. Earlier, Matthew Hoggard moved into sixth place in England's list of Test wicket-takers with an early morning breakthrough. Yorkshire's Hoggard removed West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo in the fifth full over of the day to take his Test tally to 237 victims - overtaking Alec Bedser in the process. Having sent down only 40.4 overs in the opening two days due to incessant rain, England's bid to dismiss the tourists cheaply got under way on time. They were greeted with heavy cloud cover but it was a misjudgment rather than a classic piece of swing bowling which accounted for Bravo, who chopped an attempted pull into off-stump, having added only a single to his overnight 43.
