Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, says the Tri-Nations requires a different approach when compared to the recent Lions Series and says his team will need to "adapt their style."
According to De Villiers, games between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia are generally more intense when it comes to physicality and pace.We have to shift our focus onto a totally different game in the Tri-Nations, one that is more intense, both in physicality and pace," De Villiers wrote in his column on the SA Rugby website.
De Villiers came under fire last year for trying to implement a new 'heads-up' approach to the Boks side, which resulted in the team getting the wooden spoon in the 2008 Tri-Nations. Since then we have seen a more conservative and traditional style from the Boks which has garnered more success.
The main problem with the expansive style which De Villiers originally promoted was that many of the senior players were uncomfortable with it, and he has thus decided to introduce minor adjustments to their more favoured forward-oriented approach. According to the coach, these have been well-received by the players.
"The adjustments that we have made in this regard have been well received and implemented by the players and we hope that this is evident on Saturday.
De Villiers is looking forward to playing in Bloemfontein on Saturday, as it has been a successful venue for the Springboks in the past, having lost only once in seven attempts since 1996.
"Since arriving in Bloemfontein late last week we have had several really good training sessions. The guys have come back refreshed from their break and have renewed enthusiasm for the Tri-Nations."
"Bloemfontein has been a happy hunting ground for Springbok rugby teams down the years and it holds particularly fond memories for me having being the venue for my first Test in charge in 2008."
He hopes that his team will provide the Bloemfontein crowd a good showing against their traditional rivals, the All Blacks.
"Hopefully we can give them [the people of Bloemfontein] more to cheer about on Saturday and make sure that their city remains one that is kind to the Boks."
