The All Blacks slumped to a disappointing 31-19 defeat at the hands of the Springboks in Durban on Saturday with few players really performing to the best of their ability.
The South Africans, inspired by flyhalf Morne Steyn, produced an impressive tactical display to overcome New Zealand and make it two wins in a row against their great rival.
Richie McCaw's men started the match well enough but seemed to lose their composure as the game drew on and, with the Springboks happy to hoist the high ball on to the Kiwi back three, made numerous errors under pressure.
Certainly not what you would call a typical All Black performance, perhaps the one real highlight was the performance of young prop forward Owen Franks. The 21 year-old stood his ground and looks like a promising star for the future.
Pete Murison rates all the All Black players?
New Zealand:
15 Mils Muliaina:
The experienced fullback battled for all his worth but was constantly put under pressure and, apart from a couple dangerous darting runs, failed to make an impression. 6/10
14 Joe Rokocoko:
A disappointing afternoon for 'Big Joe'. Put his team under pressure a couple times with major defensive errors. Clearly determined to do well, keen to run everything he could - just too many simple errors. 4/10
13 Conrad Smith:
The Kiwi playmaker was solid defensively and had a couple good breaks and, along with Nonu, did give the Springbok defence some work to do. 7/10
12 Ma'a Nonu:
Started the game very well, running strongly and directly. As the ball dried up so did his influence. The All Blacks needed to see more of him in the second half. 7/10
11 Sitiveni Sivivatu:
A complete rollercoaster of a day for the Chiefs flyer. Heavily involved in a lot of the exciting attacking play from the All Blacks, making a couple of great breaks, but then was weak under the high ball and made a number of silly handling errors. 5/10
10 Stephen Donald:
Unusually poor day under the high ball - putting his team under pressure far too often. Couple handling errors as well, failed to have any semblance of control of the game. 4/10
9 Jimmy Cowan:
Dreadful start - put his team in trouble a couple of times because of predictable and inaccurate kicking from the base of the ruck. Got slightly better as the first half went on but was pulled off just three minutes into the second period. 4/10
8 Rodney So'oialo:
The experienced No.8 will want to forget Saturday in a hurry. Far too many basic errors on the night and, while he carried well once or twice, he was dominated by the Springbok loose forward trio. 4/10
7 Richie McCaw (captain):
A disappointing afternoon for the All Black captain. Failed to have any real impact at the breakdown and when the pressure started to tell he should have been the one to stand up and be counted. 4/10
6 Jerome Kaino:
Gave away two silly penalties in the first half was generally quite good. Strong in the tackle and gave a nice final pass to make Isaac Ross's try. 6/10
5 Isaac Ross:
Finished off a great team try early in the game but then spent 10 minutes off the field after receiving a silly yellow card. Overshadowed by the South African lock pairing, still lots to learn on the international stage. 5/10
4 Brad Thorn:
The enforcer in the All Blacks lineup had a tough battle on Saturday. The South Africans were simply too dominant in the contact situations for too much of the game - Thorn could do little to impose himself. 5/10
3 Owen Franks:
Some very good work from the 21 year-old in the loose. Held his own against 'the Beast' at scrum time and made numerous big tackles, driving his man back. 7/10
2 Andrew Hore:
The lineout continues to be a problem for the All Blacks and, while it is wrong to blame just the hooker, he didn't help himself with some poor throwing. Another who failed to make a mark on the game as he would normally expect to do. Replaced after 43 minutes. 5/10
1 Tony Woodcock:
Seemed to just have the edge on John Smit at scrum time and, as always, worked well around the park - it just wasn't enough. Personally not a bad performance but as a unit the All Black tight five were well beaten by the Boks. 7/10
Replacements:
16 Keven Mealamu: (On for Hore on 43 minutes.)
Seemed to shore up the lineout a little bit and battled bravely but still part of a pack which seemed rattled by the home side. 6/10
17 John Afoa: (On for Franks on 65 minutes.)
Held his own at the scrum against Mtawarira but the final quarter of an hour saw the All Blacks largely on the back foot and Afoa forced to man the fringes. 5/10
18 Jason Eaton:
Not enough time to be rated.
19 Kieran Read: (On for Kaino on 60 minutes.)
Came on at a time when the All Blacks needed some inspiration - unfortunately he didn't have any in stock. Defended bravely but failed to unsettle the Springboks.
20 Piri Weepu: (On for Cowan on 43 minutes.)
Looked sharp when he first came into the game but also made some uncharacteristic errors at crucial times. 6/10
21 Luke McAlister: (On for Donald on 61 minutes.)
Announced his arrival with a long-range penalty goal but that was about as good as it got for the former Sale Sharks star. Tired to do too much himself, losing the ball in contact a couple times when trying to break the line. 5/10
22 Cory Jane:
Not enough time to be rated.
Got something to say?
