Is Tiger Woods mortal? His compatriots aren?t too sure? The English Premiership managers are fighting like cat and dog and the Proteas are attempting to break the eerie hoodoo in the six-month long series against the Australians. All this and more in sports Week in Quotes!
QUOTES OF THE WEEK:
"They have a very big support staff, which includes Buchanan's son, and most of them are from Queensland. The [Kolkata Knight Riders'] owners - poor souls - have little idea that they are being milked." - Sunil Gavaskar is clearly not a card-carrying member of the John Buchanan fan club.
"There are not many of us who have that memory. I won't mention that game around the squad before tomorrow." ? Australian skipper Ricky Ponting makes a wise call ahead of the third ODI against South Africa. The ?game? he is referring to is the last time the two teams met at Newlands? Australia lost by 196 runs.
TIGER WALKS ALONE:
With the first major of 2009, The Masters, hogging the golfing headlines this weekend, everybody seems to be talking about Tiger Woods?
"It certainly is a fun challenge for all of us to try and compete in an era where arguably the best player of all time is playing." ? Two-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson seems content just playing against Tiger Woods.
"I felt like I could play that way every week and it's just not possible in any sport - well I guess it is because Tiger does it." ? Defending Masters champion Trevor Immelman wishes he could be as consistent as the one-and-only Tiger Woods.
"He has never missed one yet and he doesn't know how to miss it. He has a pretty solid belief he's going to make it. It's pretty impressive to watch actually." ? Tiger never misses a putt according to Geoff Ogilvy.
"Phil would do that less than that just because he's more human that Tiger." - Ogilvy does not see the same quality in Phil Mickelson apparently.
At this rate it is a wonder Tiger even turns up. The rest of the field seem to be in awe of the world number one? But Padraig Harrington takes a slightly more levelled approach.
"I can't be a rival. I'm always fighting with myself. It's a bad mental outlook to be focusing on one other person. The only person you focus on is yourself."
MIND GAMES:
As the English Premiership nears its climax all the managers seem to be having a right old moan about each other!
"Everyone is screaming that Liverpool are our challenge. But I think whoever wins between Liverpool and Chelsea in the Champions League will be our biggest threat because of the effect it will have on them." ? Manchester United boss Alez Ferguson forgets about his own team?s Champions League match against Porto and focuses on the clash between Liverpool and Chelsea? Man U were held to a surprise 2-2 draw.
"He likes to talk too much about the others teams. I don't play mind games. I just think he is a little bit scared." ? On the eve of the match against Chelsea, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez tells Fergie to concentrate on his own and then focuses on Manchester United and their boss? Liverpool were thrashed 3-1 by Chelsea.
"What was it? Five minutes added time? I'm sure we wouldn't have got it at Villa Park." One rule for Manchester United, one for everybody else according to Aston Villa boss Martin O?Neill after his side went down 3-2 to the Red Devils.

The results in the current series between the Proteas and Australia in South Africa has mirrored the contest in Australia. On both tours the visitors won the first two Tests before losing the third; on both tours the hosts triumphed in the two Twenty20 internationals; and on both tours the visiting team won the opening ODI and then lost the second. If the eeriness continues it will mean Australia are destined to take the next three ODIs?
"It's been a hard three or four months against Australia and it's been really competitive. Hopefully, starting tomorrow, we can turn things around and change the hoodoo." ? Proteas captain Graeme Smith is not reading into it too much.
Got something to say?
