The Wallabies woeful Tri-Nations campaign continued, as they succumbed to a far superior Springbok team 32-25 in Perth.
The Wallabies had no answer to a rampaging Bok team that added an attacking dimension to the kick-and-chase approach seen thus far in this campaign. The seven point margin didn't reflect the match, as the Boks were better in almost all facets.
The front-row stood up well, while James O'Connor and Matt Giteau were shining lights in amongst an otherwise dour display from the struggling Wallabies. It doesn't look to get any better for them next week against a South African side that will be hell-bent on securing their first Tri-Nations crown since 2004.
Tim Human rates the Wallaby players…
15 James O'Connor:
Got little ball in the first half, but was threatening in the second. His great hands and vision are a bit wasted at the back and he may have had more of an influence at
No.12.7/10
14 Lachie Turner:
Another busy display from Turner. Got involved at every opportunity and scored a late consolation try, but made the mistake which led to Habana’s first try. 6/10
13 Ryan Cross:
A very quiet game for the Force man. He wasn't very noticeable, which is either a result of him cutting his flowing locks, or by virtue of the fact that he offered no penetration against a solid Bok defensive line. 5/10
12 Adam Ashley-Cooper:
He put in a good tactical kick which indirectly led to Giteau's first try, but like his midfield partner, he found no way through with the ball in hand. 6/10
11 Peter Hynes:
Good under the high ball, but little impact on attack.6/10
10 Matt Giteau:
It sometime's seemed like it was Giteau vs South Africa as
the little maestro tried his best to ignite his team's attack. He scored two well-taken tries, but it was always going to be too much for him to win it singlehandedly. How effective would he be in a better team?.7/10
9 Luke Burgess:
Admittedly his pack struggled at the breakdown, but a lot of the Wallabies problems stem from Burgess's slow and laboured approach. He offers very little and his passing was woeful. Genia deserves more of a look-in. 3/10
8 Richard Brown:
Dropped two balls into touch early on, and did very little else before being taken off early in the second half.5/10
7 George Smith:
He couldn't do much against the wave of Bok pressure at every ruck. He is a great fetcher, but is limited against the collective force of the Boks. 6/10
6 Rocky Elsom:
Some shoddy handling, but got well
involved in the loose on occasions. He needs some more soldiers with him in the trenches. 6/10
5 Mark Chisholm:
Not a bad comeback performance as a lineout jumper, but didn't add much else. 5/10
4 James Horwill:
The lineouts were improved this week and he even snared a Bok ball or two. 6/10
3 Ben Alexander:
A huge improvement on Baxter last week. Held is own against the Beast and will look to cement his No.3 spot from here on. 7/10
2 Stephen Moore:
Lineouts were better than in previous weeks and was part of a surprisingly good scrumming display from the Wallabies.7/10
1 Benn Robinson:
Put Smit under all sorts of pressure at scrum-time. Solid in general play in an impressive showing overall. 7/10
Replacements:
16 Tatafu Polota-Nau: (On for Moore in last twenty minutes)
Not enough time to be rated
17 Al Baxter:
Not enough time to be rated
18 Dean Mumm:
Not enough time to be rated
19 David Pocock: (On for Brown on 48 minutes.)
Not a tremendously effective cameo, but toiled hard around the park.6/10
20 Will Genia: (On for Burgess on 57 minutes)
An immediate increase in tempo when he came on. His slick passing and urgency around the fringes should surely earn him a starting place sooner rather than later. 6.5/10
21 Quade Cooper: (On for Cross on 65 minutes)
Not enough time to be rated
22 Drew Mitchell: (On in the closing minutes)
Not enough time to be rated
