I sneak in an extra workout on the weekend and head to Monday's session feeling a little dazed. The 5am wake-up is probably something I am going to struggle getting used to…
I was warned that the second week would be tough, and while the beginning of the session goes off reasonably well, I shut down mentally — and physically — during the intervals on the treadmill. John tries his best to get me back on track, but I can't find anything in the tank.
I leave the class disappointed with myself, and wondering how the rest of the week will pan out. Even the 2kg weight-loss is not enough to lighten my mood.
John is in constant contact throughout the week and is always available to answer questions. Dietary concerns and exercise tips are an e-mail or sms away and it provides plenty of motivation knowing that advice is there to be given.
I am determined to restore lost pride during my second one-on-one and I push myself harder than before.
Apart from a rather embarrassing cough/spit on the treadmill it all goes pretty well. I finish strongly and leave feeling like I have made significant progress.
Friday comes and goes in a blur as I take on another group session (more video on that later) and I soon discover that the treadmill is still my weakness. The final time-trial ends with me clinging on for dear life, determined to finish under my initial time, and busting a lung. Two weeks gone — and still a long way to go…
Rob will be tracking his progress in a bi-weekly column so be sure to follow what is certain to be an emotional and amusing journey for our out-of-shape sports pundit right here on iafrica.com.
