The Bulls-Cheetahs clash was billed as the big clash of the weekend and they certainly didn't disappoint as the hosts just managed to hold out the Free Staters in the end.
It's not surprising then, that most of this week's selection are dominated by 10 of the players involved in that clash.
The other big game of the weekend turned out to be a bit one-sided with Western Province running out comfortable winners at a soggy Newlands Stadium. The Cape side has four representatives in this week's team while two of the Griquas players also got the nod.
Several players have become regular selections and this week we have seven back from last week ? Juan de Jongh (Western Province), No.8 Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls), lock Jacques Lombaard (Griquas), wings Lionel Mapoe and Fabien Juries, prop Wian du Preez and hooker Adriaan Strauss (FS Cheetahs).
Team of the Week — Round 12:
15 Joe Pietersen (Western Province):
There were a few other strong contenders for this spot but Pietersen's clinical all-round display in torrid conditions gave him the edge. If he continues this kind of form he may even get a Bok call up for the year-end tour.
Bubbling under: Stefan Terblanche (The Sharks)
14 Fabien Juries (Free State Cheetahs):
There wasn't a lot of debate about this selection. Juries returns to our squad this week, in a new position, after his electrifying running set Loftus alight at the weekend.
Bubbling under: Gerhard van den Heever (Blue Bulls)
13 Juan de Jongh (Western Province):
The young Western Province centre is making a lot of people sit up and take notice of his obvious ability and he has well and truly cemented his spot in the WP midfield. He may also be on the Bok radar.
Bubbling under: Andries Strauss (The Sharks)
12 Wynand Olivier (Blue Bulls):
He is arguably the best midfield distributor in South Africa, while his line-breaking ability was also highlighted with a fine solo effort on Saturday.
Bubbling under: Doppies La Grange (Golden Lions)
11 Lionel Mapoe (Free State Cheetahs):
He was a constant threat on attack against the Bulls and his pace and power are attributes that will fit in nicely with the Bok gameplan.
Bubbling under: Gio Aplon (Western Province)
10 Jaques-Louis Potgieter (Free State Cheetahs):
He is on his way to Pretoria and that may just have been why he was so keen on giving his future teammates a sample of what to expect when he arrives in 2010.
Bubbling under: Morne Steyn (Blue Bulls)
9 Sarel Pretorius (Griquas):
He has consistently been one of Griquas major strike weapons and if the Cheetahs don't snap him up for the Super 14 somebody else most certainly will.
Bubbling under: Dewaldt Duvenage (Western Province)
8 Ashley Johnson (Free State Cheetahs):
They've tried turning him into a hooker but his form at the back of the scrum over the past few weeks suggests that experiment is no longer needed.
Bubbling under: Willem Alberts (Golden Lions)
7 Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls):
He may be behind Pierre Spies in the No.8 pecking order for the Bulls but he showed his class on the flank against Bok incumbent fetcher, Heinrich Brussow at the weekend.
Bubbling under: Duane Vermeulen (Western Province)
6 Francois Louw (Western Province):
He has been one of the most underrated players due the country's surplus of quality loose-fowards. But he is playing brilliant rugby and he has finally etched his name among the counry's finest flanks.
Bubbling under: Heinrich Brussow (Free State Cheetahs)
5 Victor Matfield (Blue Bulls):
He remains without peer, not only in the country but around the world and his return to the Pretoria outfit is a major boost to their run-in to the playoffs.
Bubbling under: David de Villiers (Free State Cheetahs)
4 Jacques Lombaard (Griquas):
He has been a key man in Griquas' engine room but he will face a big Test against Matfield and co. this weekend.
Bubbling under: Nico Breedt (Free State Cheetahs)
3 Brok Harris (Western Province):
He has come under a lot of flak in the past but his solid outing against Griquas silenced many of his critics.
Bubbling under: WP Nel (Free State Cheetahs)
2 Adriaan Strauss (Free State Cheetahs):
He has been the form hooker in the Currie Cup competition and his season-ending injury, sustained at the weekend, has robbed the Cheetahs of an inspirational leader
Bubbling under: Tiaan Liebenberg (Western Province)
1 Wian du Preez (Free State Cheetahs):
He is one of the best scrummagers in the competition and he looks set to go back into the Bok mix at the end of the year.
Bubbling under: Wikus Blaauw (Western Province)
