CC Team of the Week
Article By:
Bowing to public demand, we have decided to do a Team of the Week for the Currie Cup. We did miss last week, but we bring you our weekly selections from all the Round Two action.
The Sharks, Lions and Blue Bulls all scored impressive victories, but a number of Western Province players impressed us sufficiently to force their way into our weekly selection.
In fact five members of the WP side made it into our squad, four from the Lions, three Bulls, two Sharks and a Cheetah.
We also bring you our 'Bubbling Under' selections, the players we felt pushed hard for selection, but just didn't make it.
Team of the Week - Round Two:15 - Stefan Terblanche (Sharks):
Not just his captaincy, but the calm demeanour and general play makes him the standout in his position. Bubbling under: Tiger Mangweni (Blue Bulls)
14 - Gerhard van den Heever (Blue
Bulls):
The South African Under-20 flyer, who made his Super 14 debut earlier this year, showed he is ready for a more permanent move to senior rugby. Bubbling under: Dusty Noble (Golden Lions)
13 - Andries Strauss (Sharks):
This promising midfielder has been around for a few years now and this may well be the season that he steps into the frontline at the Durban outfit. Bubbling under: Wilmaure Louw (Griquas)
12 - Wynand Olivier (Blue Bulls):
Continuing the superb form from the Super 14, which saw him get a Springbok recall before being axed again, Olivier set up a crucial try for the Bulls with a sublime run. Bubbling under: Riaan Swanepoel (Sharks)
11 - Johan Jackson (Lions):
Still just 22, and transferred from across the Jukskei at the Blue Bulls, he is grabbing his opportunity for some Currie Cup game time with both
hands. Bubbling under: Luvo Sogidashe (Boland Cavaliers)
10 - Francois Brummer (Blue Bulls):
Another of the Bulls' young guns, a member of the SA U20 squad, that stepped up to the plate with a commanding performance at the weekend. Bubbling under: Willem de Waal (Western Province)
9 - Jano Vermaak (Lions):
He showed that he deserves better recognition from the national selectors than he is getting. That elusive first Bok cap can't be that far off. Bubbling under: Heinie Adams (Blue Bulls)
8 - Willem Alberts (Lions):
His tireless workrate and power plays make him one of his team's most valuable assets.
Bubbling under: Keegan Daniel (Sharks)
7 - Pieter Louw (Western Province):
He may not have the enormous bulk that some of the other loose forwards bring to the game, but he more
than makes up for that with the heart he shows. Full-blooded in every game. Bubbling under: Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls)
6 - Cobus Grobbelaar (Lions):
He is one of those unfortunate players who is in a position where South Africa has an abundance of quality players. He certainly would not let the national team down. Bubbling under: Jacques Burger (Blue Bulls)
5 - Chris Jack (Western Province):
The difference he has made and value he brings to the Province tight five can't be underestimated. Bubbling under: David de Villiers (Cheetahs)
4 - Anton van Zyl (Western Province):
His return to Cape Town, after years with the Lions, has rejuvenated his career. Bubbling under: Flip van der Merwe (Blue Bulls)
3 - Brock Harris (Western Province):
It is not often you see a Bulls scrum under
so much pressure and he was up against a seasoned Springbok in Gürthro Steenkamp. Bubbling under: Bees Roux (Griquas)
2 - Tiaan Liebenberg (Western Province):
Not only is he at the heart of a far more commanding WP scrum, his work around the park is immense. Bubbling under: Craig Burden (Sharks)
1 - Wian du Preez (Cheetahs):
A Springbok tourist two years ago and an Emerging Springbok this year, he can't be too far off that first cap. Bubbling under: Wicus Blaauw (Western Province)
