The Wallabies broke their losing streak with a well-deserved 21-6 win over the Springboks in a Tri-Nations match that never reached great heights as a spectacle.
It was a scrappy game on the whole and was dominated by poor execution by both sides. The Wallabies controlled more of the play as the game wore on and were far more incisive than the rudderless Boks. Many of their young guns performed well and Robbie Deans will be confident that he has the blueprint for a potentially world-beating side. It was not a game, though, that either team will look back as one of their best and was of surprisingly low-quality given its significance. All of Australia, and indeed South Africa, will be hoping that they can kick on and produce another winning display against the All Blacks in two weeks time.
Tim Human rates the Wallaby players?
15 James O'Connor:
The youngster was solid at the back and strong in contact. His positional play was impressive and showed some good touches on attack. Another step towards becoming a renowned international. 7/10
14 Lachie Turner:
Looked to get involved early on and got perilously close to scoring before Habana smashed him into touch and out of the game with an injury.5/10
13 Adam Ashley-Cooper:
Adventurous with the ball in hand, great on defence and ran a superb angle for the opening try. Much more at home with more space in the outside channel.7/10
12 Berrick Barnes:
Made some shocking passes early on, but made up for that with a beautifully weighted ball to Ashley-Cooper for the opening score.6/10
11 Drew Mitchell:
He was good under the high ball, and worked hard around the park. Got in a few gaps but lacks the acceleration to really make it count. 6.5/10
10 Matt Giteau:
Always dangerous with the ball and kicked well out of hand. But contributed towards what was a messy game from both teams for the most part. 6.5/10
9 Will Genia:
A massive improvement on Burgess. His passing was slick off the back and he adds a much needed spark to this Wallaby team. Unlucky to just miss out on a try. 7/10
8 George Smith (Captain):
Led a much-improved display from his charges, but wasn't a particularly imposing individual performance. A menace on defence and around the fringes, but he doesn?t seem to have the same impact as he did in the past. 6/10
7 David Pocock:
An impressive showing from the young openside. He was one of the hardest working men around the field and definitely put his hand up for a starting berth in the future. 7/10
6 Rocky Elsom:
He was strong with the ball in hand and made a great break that almost led to a try from Genia. A couple of handling errors spoilt an otherwise solid performance. 6.5/10
5 Mark Chisholm:
The big second-row forward continued his impressive comeback with another solid outing. Good in loose and at the set-piece. 7/10
4 James Horwill:
Worked hard on defence and at the lineout and made the odd burst in the loose. 7/10
3 Ben Alexander:
Got the better of the Beast at scrum-time and worked hard around the park. A real find for this young Australian team.7/10
2 Tatafu Polota-Nau:
An explosive showing from the burly hooker. Made some memorable big tackles, but got injured in the first half. 7/10
1 Benn Robinson:
Solid on the loosehead for the most part, and put Smit under tremendous pressure in the scrums. 7/10
Replacements:
16 Stephen Moore (on for Polota-Nau at 33 minutes):
Solid at the set-piece but lacked the destructive ability of the man he replaced. 6/10
17 Pek Cowan:
Not enough time to be rated
18 Dean Mumm:
Not enough time to be rated
19 Wycliff Palu:
Not enough time to be rated
20 Luke Burgess:
Not enough time to be rated
21 Quade Cooper (On for Barnes near the end):
Not enough time to be rated
22 Peter Hynes: (On for Turner on 31 minutes)
Made a great impact on the wing. Looked dangerous with the ball and was superb under the high ball. 7/10
