After a fortnight of cricket, less if you're in the Proteas squad, the iafrica.com sports team sat down and selected their ICC Champions Trophy Team of the Tournament.
It doesn't make for pretty reading if you're a South African fan, but then the Proteas did not stick around long enough to really make an impression ? well, except for their skipper, who showed his trademark grit and could not be ignored.
Unsurprisingly, the Australians have the most members, two of which were selected largely on their performances during the Final on Monday night ? when it counted most.
iafrica.com's Team of the Tournament:
Graeme Smith:
How could we ignore the Proteas skipper? His knock in the game against England was full of grit, determination and sheer tenacity. Despite only playing in three games, Smith was still the third highest run-getter ? ditto on the average. If the rest of the team had followed suit, who knows how the tournament could have turned out?
Shane Watson:
The big Australia all-rounder was the star of the show in the Final on Monday, but his two tons in the tournament are the knocks that assured him of his place in our team. Watson hammered 265 runs at an average of 88.33, and picked up six wickets as a bonus.
Ricky Ponting: The Aussie skipper proved once again that he is never down for long. Ponting led the way with the bat and ensured that his team remains the side to beat when it comes to knock-out tournaments. Back-to-back Champs Trophies to go with their World Cups? it's getting a bit much, really.
Mahela Jayawardene:
The Sri Lankan veteran was close to a unanimous choice in our selection meeting. He may not have blitzed the bowling attacks, but he was consistent in all his team's matches and shores up our middle-order quite nicely.
Paul Collingwood:
One of two Englishmen in our side, the veteran all-rounder shone with the bat for England and was handy with the ball in hand as well.
MS Dhoni:
Truthfully, few of the 'keepers really did a hell of a lot in the tournament. We toyed with the idea of Brendon McCullum (who would have opened as well) until he showed a distinct lack of BMT in the Final. Dhoni was the best behind the stumps and adds leadership abilities as well.
Daniel Vettori:
Another unanimous choice, the New Zealand captain was a star for his team ? as usual ? and was unfortunate to miss out on the Final. He was one of the top wicket-takers in the tournament and with a batting average of 50 he provides our team with some cover lower down the order.
Mitchell Johnson:
Johnson has put his Ashes slump behind him. He is quickly turning into a very handy all-rounder, pulling his team out of the fire against the West Indies, and providing them with plenty of pace. When you're in a pinch you need a man to turn to ? and Johnson is that man.
Stuart Broad:
Who would have thought the English would provide the second largest quota of our team? Not us, but then Broad certainly deserves his place. He only featured in three games, but was still the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament. He also can do some damage with the bat.
Brett Lee:
He may have been written off just a couple of months ago, but the veteran seamer bounced back in a big way at the Champs Trophy. He bowled with pace a-plenty and in the Final had the Kiwis hopping and ducking during a fierce display. It's good to have the Aussie back.
Mohammad Aamer:
He may only be 17, but the Pakistani teenager was a constant danger with the ball. Like Pakistan we also keep an eye on the future and the young speedster complements the rest of our pace attack quite well, doesn't he?
