So, not only have Safa sacked the Bafana Bafana coach less than a year before the 2010 World Cup, they have also replaced him with the guy he replaced! Despite the shenanigans, our readers do not seem all that concerned... and we're asking: why not?
It's been an interesting couple of weeks in soccer. First Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana is publicly endorsed, then, just as publicly, he walks the plank. A day later and Carlos Alberto Parreira says he knows nothing about being brought back. A couple of days after that he is named the new coach...
That this has all happened less than a year out from the 2010 World Cup is absolutely ridiculous. In fact 'ridiculous' is not the word I would have used. Unfortunately, my boss told me I cannot use the word I wanted to...
When the news broke last week, however, it struck me that very little interest was being shown by the iafrica.com readers. In our 'most read' section on the sports pages the revelations hardly made a dent. In fact, Herschelle Gibbs being dropped, a 'quotes of the week' feature and a Rassie Erasmus interview were all read more frequently.
What I want to know is why?
Because, really, we should all be very concerned by what has transpired recently. Remember, we are not that far away from the World Cup ? the largest sporting event, with the exception of the Olympic Games, in the world. Bafana Bafana need to perform well to keep locals involved.
So why does nobody out there care? There are a few reasons I can think of:
Personally, I am furious with the recent events in local soccer. But I am curious as to what you, the readers, think. Leave all your comments below and let's start the debate. One thing is for sure, this isn't over; not by a long shot.
Got something to say?
