France extended their 12-year unbeaten run against South Africa on French soil when they recorded a hard-fought 20-13 win at Stadium Municipal, Toulouse, on Friday.
With the teams scoring one try each, the boots of scrumhalves Julien Dupuy (four penalties) and Morgan Parra (one penalty) made the difference against the Boks that had two players yellow carded for professional fouls.
Jan de Koning rates the Springbok players!
15 Zane Kirchner: Had a kick charged down early, a very poor second-half restart and hesitant on defence. 4/10
14 JP Pietersen: Although he was generally solid at the back, and there was an awesome touch-finder, he also produced silly quick throw at a crucial stage in the game and too lackadaisical. 5/10
13 Jaque Fourie: His defensive abilities were crucial, but had no chances on attack. 5/10
12 Adi Jacobs: There was a good early tackle, but had a knock and gave a penalty away at a tackle to set the tone. Was a real mixed bag. 4/10
11 Bryan Habana: He worked hard, but as I said elsewhere, it was a night of few opportunities for wings. 5/10
10 Morne Steyn: His worst game in the Bok jersey - a right royal mare. Kicked directly into touch, kicking too deep and then a yellow card for tripping. 3/10
9 Fourie du Preez: Solid as usual, with good options. It was by no means flawless, but one of the better players in the Bok squad. 6/10
8 Ryan Kankowski: Looked out of his depth. A knock-on at a maul, lost the ball that led to Clerc's try and also lost the ball in contact too easily - not to mention the yellow card for killing the ball. 2/10
7 Schalk Burger: Conceded an early penalty and missed a few tackles. While he worked very hard, his ball control was very poor. 4/10
6 Heinrich Brussow: The Boks' best player by far and to think that he was originally going to be dropped for this Test. Brilliant work at the breakdown and excellent defence awesome - winning vital turnovers. 8/10
5 Victor Matfield: Great steal at line-out, showing his class, but then had one stolen from him by Chabal. 5/10
4 Bakkies Botha: He was bleeding for the cause and had a great physical presence, but also gave away a silly penalty at a maul. 5/10
3 John Smit (captain): Gave away a penalty at a ruck, was under pressure at scrums - even though he got his own back later - and a great try from French overthrow. A huge tackle and high workrate. Mixed bag, but a pass mark. 6/10
2 Bismarck du Plessis: Gave away a penalty at the breakdown and like so many of his teammates slipped off tackles too easily. 5/10
1 Tendai Mtawarira: His worst game in the Bok jersey and looked distracted. Maybe his residency and passport troubles bothered him 3/10
Replacements:
16 Adriaan Strauss (on for Du Plessis, 70th min): Crucial steal, but poor line-out throw. Not enough time to be rated.
17 Wian du Preez: Not used.
18 CJ van der Linde (on for Mtawarira, 54th min): Gave away a penalty at scrum for 'running around' and then second penalty at scrum, two minutes from time right in front. No impact. 4/10
19 Andries Bekker (on for Botha, blood - 8th min and 70th min; on for Matfield, blood 20th min): He worked hard and had one of his better games for the Boks. But he still lacks a physical presence at the breakdown. 5/10
20 Danie Rossouw (on for Burger, 48th min): Mainly seen in defensive role and made no real impact. 4/10
21 Ruan Pienaar: Not used.
22 Wynand Olivier (on for Jacobs, 70th min): Not enough time to be rated.
Got something to say?
