After their superb win at Newlands on Friday night, South Africa were brought crashing back to earth by England in Port Elizabeth on Sunday. Barend Prins rates the Proteas players.
Graeme Smith:
Second consecutive failure for the big Proteas skipper. Questions have to be asked about the wisdom of batting first on a wicket that was always going to get better as the day went on. I doubt that batting first is a decision Smith had made in the heat of the moment and the whole management team should take some of the blame for what ended up being an awful decision. Unfortunately for Smith, he is the one that will take the brunt of the blame. 1/10.
Hashim Amla:
Looked classy as ever before getting himself out in a rather soft manner. 2/10
AB de Villiers:
Pretty much continued where he left off on Friday before getting what, in my opinion, was a rather rough leg-before decision from the umpire. I am aware that Hawkeye suggested that the ball would clip the outside of the leg stump, but what has happened to giving the benefit of the doubt to the batsman? Considering the angle from which Bresnan released the ball, the seam movement off the wicket and the position of impact, the umpire has to be guessing that the ball will hit the stumps. 6/10.
JP Duminy:
Another soft dismissal for the talented Capetonian. It is no secret nowadays that JP is a little suspect on the hook and he will be continued to be peppered with the short stuff until he plays the shot convincingly. Didn't have the opportunity to impress with the ball as he had on Friday. 1/10.
Alviro Peterson:
The only batsman to come out of the match with his reputation enhanced, Alviro is quickly winning me over. I have never quite understood the selectors' thinking in playing him in the middle order, but it is proving to be an inspired selection. His dismissal was another one that suggested that it was just not going to be South Africa's day - brilliantly caught by Luke Wright at mid-on. 8/10.
Mark Boucher:
Was castled by an absolute Jaffa from Man-of-the-match Jimmy Anderson which very few batsmen would have been able to keep out. I do believe Boucher is batting one spot too high however. Another tidy performance behind the stumps. 5/10.
Ryan McLaren:
Bowled tidily and should have had the wicket of Kevin Pietersen, but there were never enough runs on the board for the bowlers to play with. Missed a golden opportunity to cement his place in side with the bat however. Does he have enough to his game to bat at number seven for a top international team though? I have not seen enough to conclusively answer that question, but at the moment I tend to think that he does not. 4/10
Johan Botha:Got a snorted from Anderson, but bowled tidily, taking two of the three wickets. Has probably overtaken Roelof van der Merwe again as South Africa's premier spin bowler in ODIs. 6/10.
Morne Morkel:Looked comfortable at the crease before falling victim to another iffy leg-before decision. Was robbed by the umpires of the wicket of England captain Andrew Strauss, and bowled fairly well throughout. 7/10.
Wayne Parnell:Another of the South African lower-order batsman that looked comfortable before losing his wicket. With the umpires in the form they were, probably should have gotten the wicket of Jonathan Trott with his first delivery. Still needs to work on his control however. 6/10
Charl Langeveldt:I appreciate that this match probably isn't the best example to use, but Langeveldt looks distinctly past it. 4/10.
