Kelly leads in Canada
Sat, 25 Jul 2009 12:00
American Jerry Kelly topped the leaderboard with three holes to go in the second round on Friday as the $5.1-million PGA Canadian Open suffered through a second-straight day of weather delays.
The 42-year-old Kelly moved to 11-under par through 15 holes of the second round after firing a seven-under 65 in the first round which was completed early Friday.
"I'm striking the ball better than I ever have," Kelly said. "And the putter is coming back again, so I'm ready to go play some golf."
The second round resumes on Saturday morning at Glen Abbey Golf Club following two lengthy rain and lightning delays Thursday and Friday. No one has completed two rounds.
Kevin Na and Camilo Villegas shot nine-under 63 to share the first round lead. Villegas is one-under through 15 holes and shares second place at minus-10.
Like Villegas, Tim Herron, Martin Laird and Nathan Green are at 10-under.
Kelly rolled in seven birdies in a nine-hole stretch in the opening round. He had one bogey and five birdies before the second round was halted for the day because of lightning.
Na was waiting to tee off for the second round when play was suspended. He is tied for sixth at nine-under with Bob Estes, who has played 13 holes.
Defending champion Chez Reavie has also not begun his second round. Reavie must step up his game as he is at one over and the cut line is currently at two under.
The top Canadian was Calgary's Stephen Ames who shot an opening round 68.
"It's difficult. Stop, start, stop, start," Ames said.
Ames is trying to become the first Canadian to win the Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
