US PGA players usually relegated to second-tier status have their chance to shine this week at the Reno-Tahoe Open and perhaps capture an elusive first title as Parker McLachlin did last year.
Many of the world's top golfers, including top-ranked Tiger Woods, are at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational this week ahead of next week's 91st PGA Championship, the final major championship of the year.
That leaves talented players seeking a breakthrough victory to compete at this $3-million tournament.
American McLachlin rolled to a seven-stroke victory last year at Reno for his first tour title, having done the groundwork with a 10-under par 62 in the second round.
"Obviously just coming back and reliving a few of the good memories that came with the many birdies and eagles that happened last year was sure fun," McLachlin said. "It's nice to come back to a place that gives you those good vibes."
McLachlin likes the chances of some countrymen to capture their first PGA crowns this week, including Kevin Na, Charley Hoffman and John Mallinger.
"Kevin Na is one of those guys that has played really well this year but looking for his first win and he's one of those guys that he really controls his ball well, so I would look for him to play really well," McLachlin said.
"Charley Hoffman, would be another guy to look at. And then I think someone like John Mallinger who has had some streaky weeks, a younger guy coming in looking just strictly for that first win. A win would really vault his career."
Got something to say?
