PGA Tour rookie Webb Simpson seized the lead of the Barclays on Friday, his three-under 68 making him one of nine players to break par in the second round of the PGA Tour playoff series opener.
Simpson had a two-round total of eight-under 134. Paul Goydos, who led through much of the round, finished with an even-par 71 and shared second place with Steve Marino, who also carded a 71 for 136.
Spain's Sergio Garcia, who shared the overnight lead with Goydos and Marino, ballooned to a five-over 76 to fall into a tie for 11th on one-under 141.
Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson (72) and Heath Slocum (72) were tied for fourth on four-under 138.
Simpson, 24, teed off on 10 and made an inauspicious bogey at the par-three 11th. But he bounced back with birdies at 13 and 14 and picked up another stroke at 16.
Simpson took the lead with birdies at five and six.
A bogey at the par-five eighth cut Simpson's lead, but he still finished the day with his first overnight lead in a PGA Tour event.
"It was just one of those days where you have to stay patient, and I knew par was going to be a good score," Simpson said of the difficult, rainy conditions. "My caddie and I talked beforehand about taking advantage of the par-fives and the shorter par-fours. So it was just one of those long, tough days, but I feel good with where I'm at and stayed patient until the end."
Goydos had briefly moved to nine-under before bogeys at three of his last four holes. Despite his deflating finish, Goydos said he wasn't too disappointed.
"I didn't finish the way I wanted, but I started better than I expected," Goydos said. "The golf course was obviously very difficult this morning for those poor guys who had to play early, but the first few holes played tough, then the weather kind of laid down for us. If you told me even par, with the forecast before we started, I would have stayed in bed."
Superstar Tiger Woods posted a one-over 72 to lie tied for 17th on even-par 142. Woods stumbled early with a bogey at the second, then rebounded with birdies on six or seven.
Woods, struggling with his putter, dropped another shot at the ninth and made eight pars coming in before a bogey at 18.
Defending champion Vijay Singh notched his second straight four-over 75 for 150, missing the cut by three strokes.
Singh, who won The Barclays last year when it was held at Ridgewood, then took the Deutsche Bank Championship the following week and went on to win the FedEx Cup playoff series, is winless on the PGA Tour this year.
US Open champion Lucas Glover and Masters champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina also missed the cut.
British Open champion Stewart Cink was even par, and PGA Champion Y.E. Yang of South Korea was one-over.
Colombia's Camilo Villegas withdrew after nine holes with a wrist injury, while Australia's Mathew Goggin pulled out after eight holes with a back injury.
