Japan's teen golf prodigy Ryo Ishikawa says he will play in the star-studded HSBC Champions in Shanghai next month, skipping a domestic tournament he is supposed to host, local media reported on Thursday.
The HSBC Champions, which has become a World Golf Championship event with prize money bumped up to $7-million this year, will be held November 5-8, clashing with the Toyota-sponsored Lexus championship on the Japan Tour.
Toyota is among a host of big Japanese companies which have signed sponsorship deals with Ishikawa, who has revived the Japanese men's game after winning the domestic KSB Cup at the age of 15 in 2007.
"My father has talked to Toyota. They have asked him to tell me 'Please go for it by all means'," the 18-year-old high student told Japanese media on Wednesday as he trained for a Japan Tour event at the weekend.
"I thank Toyota for supporting me this way. Now I can go to the HSBC Champions feeling good."
Ishikawa, who turned professional last year, became eligible for the HSBC Champions by winning the Japan Tour's Tokai Classic on October 4, his fourth title of the year and sixth overall.
He is currently leading the domestic money list.
The HSBC Champions will be the 10th overseas event this year for Ishikawa, who made his US PGA debut in February. Prize money from the Shanghai event will count toward the Japan Tour earnings.
He will have yet another chance to play in a field starring World number one Tiger Woods, fellow American and second-ranked Phil Mickelson and South Korean Y. E. Yang, who won the the 2009 PGA Championship.
"The prize money will be huge and it will be a high-level fight," he said. "I am looking forward to seeing how much I can do out there."
Ishikawa made an impression at the Presidents Cup two weeks ago in San Francisco where he beat 49-year-old Kenny Perry 2 and 1 in the singles in the match play event pitting the United States against non-European Internationals.
He is glad to see Woods again in Shanghai.
"I think it will be easy for me to exchange greetings with Tiger and all. I can find my place and play in a manner different from before."
Ishikawa has played three majors this year, missing the cut at the Masters and the British Open and finishing tied for 56th spot at the US PGA Championship. He was partnered with Woods at the British Open where both bowed out at the halfway stage.
