Australian Nick O'Hern rolled in six straight birdies on the back nine en route to a seven-under 63 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Frys.com Open on Thursday.

The 38-year-old from Perth had a torrid back nine, closing with a birdie on 18 that moved him into the second 18-hole lead of his USPGA Tour career.

Bob Heintz and Heath Slocum both shot 64 and are tied for second place.

South Africa's Rory Sabbatini is in a group of four that shot five-under 65. England's Greg Owen, D.A. Points and Rickie Fowler are also two shots adrift of O'Hern.

O'Hern, who is still looking for his first victory on USPGA Tour, grabbed the lead by making eight birdies in nine holes on the back side at the Grayhawk Golf Club.

"The putter just felt really good today, which it hasn't been in quite a while," said O'Hern.

"I think seven (birdies) is my record on one nine," said O'Hern.

During the hot streak he sank six-straight birdies beginning at the 10th hole. The only miscue on the back nine came at the 16th hole where he made his lone bogey of the day.

O'Hern's previous best finish on the Tour was a runner-up at the 2006 Booz Allen Classic.

"I'm really looking for that first win over here," he said. "If I keep hitting the ball as well as I am at the moment, I'm going to give myself lots of looks at birdies, and that's the key."

O'Hern earned himself the nickname "Tiger Slayer" by beating Tiger Woods twice at the Accenture Match Play Championship.

"I never get sick of it," O'Hern laughed. "I've been called plenty of worse things."
