Former skipper Ian Woosnam has not ruled out another go at Europe's Ryder Cup captaincy when the biennial clash with the United States takes place at Celtic Manor, Wales in 2010.
The Welshman enjoyed success at the K Club in Ireland two years ago when Europe retained the cup by a record-equalling 18.5-9.5 and is popular with the players. "If the players and committee wanted me to come back it would be nice to do it in Wales," he told BBC Sport. "It might be the right time to do it and it would be nice to fetch the cup back," he added. The position is up for grabs following Nick Faldo's failure to guide the European team to success in Valhalla, Kentucky last week where the Americans won 16.5-11.5. Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal, the European vice-captain at Valhalla, had been the early favourite, but has indicated he is not interested in the job this time round. But two-time major winner Sandy Lyle of Scotland is in the hunt and he is the only one of Europe's 'Big Five' of the 1980s not yet to have captained the team, and he has received support from Ryder Cup stalwart Colin Montgomerie. "I really appreciate Colin's kind words," said Lyle, who won the 1985 Open Championship and 1988 US Masters winner. "I would be delighted and honoured to take on the challenge at Celtic Manor." The matter could be discussed in Scotland next week but it will be a meeting in Dubai in January where the captaincy will be put on the agenda.AFP
