Charl Schwartzel?s game shifted gears on Friday as he shot a seven-under-par 65 to move into a share of the halfway lead after the second round of the Vodacom Championship at the Pretoria Country Club.

He stuck his driver in his bag, and never took it out as a mark of respect to the kind of golf course he really likes, and relied on accuracy to get him his seven birdies.

?I hit a lot of irons off the tees, and rescue clubs, just to hit short of the bunkers,? he said when asked how many bunkers he?d hit in his opening two rounds. The answer was none.

?Even it leaves me with a five-iron in, it?s okay. The greens are nice and soft, so coming in with a five-iron, it still stops. I?ve tried to back off a little,? he added.

He shared the lead with Jaco Ahlers, who was all smiles after his six-under 66 saw him finish in a position he clearly relished.

?I haven?t been in this position for a while, but it?s nice,? he said. ?I?m here to enjoy it and it?s a challenge.?

Behind them on nine-under were Titch Moore and first-round leader Michiel Bothma. Bothma shot a one-under 71 after his first-round fireworks, and Moore didn?t drop a shot as he picked up six birdies in his 66.

Moore?s approach was in stark contrast to Schwartzel?s caution: ?I?m driving the ball exceptionally well,? he said.

?I?ve been using driver off most tees, and hitting it really long out there and giving myself chances,? he said.

Moore played his round under an unusual kind of pressure: ?One of my best mates passed away last week on Monday and it?s his funeral today,? he said.

Schwartzel?s calm is going to be the target for the rest of the field on the weekend.

He believes he left a better score on the course in the second round: ?The greens got really bumpy this afternoon, and I missed three five-footers for birdies today, but it wasn?t down to bad putting,? he said.

?I had a potential 63 out there. The scores are out there, but you?ve still got to treat the course well.?
