The Eagles recorded the fourth lowest ever total in South African first-class cricket when they were bowled out for 28 in their first innings of the SuperSport Series cricket fixture against the Warriors at Sahara Oval St George's on Friday.

The Eagles, replying to the Warriors' first innings total of 256, faced 24.5 overs in 119 minutes.

Sending a very clear message to the national selectors, Proteas paceman Makhaya Ntini took five wickets for nine runs in 10.5 overs, while leftarm seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe collected four for three in his eight overs. The Warriors did not enforce the follow-on.

Ntini was recently dropped from the Proteas ODI squad to face Bangladesh and Kenya in November.

There have only been three lower scores in the history South African first-class cricket.

Six lowest scores:

16 and 18: Border vs Natal, East London (1959/60)
23 Border vs Natal, East London (1920/21)
28 Eagles vs Warriors, Port Elizabeth (2008/09)
29 Griquas vs Transvaal, Johannesburg (1950/51)
30 South Africa vs England (1st Test), Port Elizabeth (1895/96)
