Proteas captain Graeme Smith paid tribute to his star all-rounder Jacques Kallis on Friday after the latter completed the double of 10 000 runs in both Test match and ODI cricket at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium.

On a day on which the Proteas came off second best against their Australian opponents, reaching 85/3 in reply to the visitors' 466 all out, Kallis completed the 12 runs he needed to reach 10 000 runs in Test cricket before becoming one of the three victims of the Australian pace attack with 27 off 44 balls.

?It has been a privilege and an honour to be part of this big moment for Jacques,? commented Smith.

?It is a fantastic achievement and one that is thoroughly deserved. For a large part of his career he had to carry South Africa's batting and it is this longetivity which is one of the signs of true greatness.

?If you add in his 250 wickets and his 100 plus catches, you get a good idea of what a giant of the game he has become.?

Kallis said it was a big moment in his career and probably one that he would appreciate better when he came to the end of his career.

?I have had many ups and downs in my career,? he added, ?but the greatest thing for me has been the way this team has played over the last two years.

?We are on the back foot at the moment but this team has the character and ability to fight its way back into this match.?

At the close of play Rob Fleming, sponsorship manager of SA Breweries, one of the main sponsors of Cricket South Africa via the Castle brand, presented a Richie Ryall painting to Kallis, depicting his skills as batsman, bowler and fielder.

The second day of the first Castle Test belonged almost exclusively to the Australians as they almost doubled their overnight total for the loss of their last five wickets with Marcus North making a maiden Test century on debut and Mitchell Johnson falling only four runs short as he ran out of partners.

In the process North and Johnson established an Australian eighth-wicket record partnership of 117 against South Africa that broke a record that had stood for 73 years.

On a pitch that was far from flat the Proteas would have been disappointed to allow Australia such a large first innings total and this was born out when the home side found themselves 2/2 in the second over with both Smith and Hashim Amla being dismissed cheaply.

The Proteas have got themselves out of this sort of trouble against Australia before in recent times and the third day will be another test of their resolve and tenacity.
