Mark Fish is a man of many talents. A world-renowned football player, 2010 FIFA World Cup ambassador, ballroom dancer and now, he is giving the world of mountain biking a whirl.

This month sees Mark compete in the Absa Cape Epic, adding this celebrated race to his long list of sporting achievements.

Best known as one of the country's pre-eminent soccer players, Mark started his football career at Arcadia Shepherds, an amateur team based at the Caledonian Stadium in Pretoria.

He was spotted by then Jomo Cosmos coach Roy Matthews and turned professional as a striker. After a stint at Orlando Pirates, Fish was part of the historic SA national team which won the African Cup of Nations in 1996, then moving onto Italian team, Lazio, English team Bolton Wanderers and finally, Charlton Athletic.

Recent years have seen Fish actively involved in South African soccer development, particularly in his role as a 2010 FIFA World Cup ambassador and with SA's leading sports trust, the JAG Foundation.

Outside of his sporting pursuits, Mark also gained local fame as one of the eight celebrities participating in the second season of Strictly Come Dancing.

The Fish has also become renowned for taking on almost impossible challenges, most notably last year's ‘Fish out of Water Challenge'.

Mark participated in the Cape Odyssey, one the globe's most challenging trail running races, with friend and previous soccer compatriot, Mark Williams.

"There is no doubt that completing the Cape Odyssey was one of the most daunting challenges that I'd ever undertaken," Mark comments.

"I'm now looking forward to the riding equivalent, the Absa Cape Epic, which should be a challenge of impressive proportions."
