Platinum Stars have appointed former Bafana Bafana captain and ex-Amaglug-glug coach Steve Komphela as their new coach for the upcoming Absa Premiership season.
Komphela, who coached Free State Stars last season, will replace Argentinean Migul Gamondi at Stars — the latter being relieved of his duties following the 'Tycoons' poor 2008/09 season.
He joins Stars on a two-year contract with an option to renew for a third year.
In officially announcing Komphela as the new head coach, Stars Managing Director Ian Riddick said that the decision to contract a South African for the coaching post at Stars was the latest in a series of changes made at the club, in order to strongly position the squad for the 2009/10 campaign.
"With Royal Bafokeng Holdings being a 100 percent owner and holding company for Platinum Stars, a lot of strategic changes had to be implemented in the structure of the club, and I am delighted that Komphela has taken up the challenge
to head up the technical team of Platinum Stars," said Riddick.
He added: "Komphela is highly respected as a former Bafana Bafana captain and central defender who played for clubs in SA and abroad, and as a man who through his coaching stints at the SA national U23 side and at PSL clubs, is an astute scholar of the Beautiful Game. I am sure that his knowledge and experience will add great value to our club."
Meanwhile, Komphela said he was delighted to be given a chance to lead a talented side like Stars.
"Platinum Stars were able to accomplish a second-place finish in the league and lifted the Telkom Knock-Out Cup two seasons ago, which proves that this club has immense talent and potential as far as winning trophies is concerned," said Komphela.
"Players want to win trophies and medals to show their children and grand children and to be the talk among the supporters.
"I am grateful to the Platinum Stars board for considering me for
this position and will do my best in order to play my part towards striving to create a successful team," concluded the former Kaizer Chiefs defender.
