The Sharks were dealt a double blow with the news that flyhalf Guy Cronjé has been handed a one-week ban, following a disciplinary hearing in Durban on Wednesday.

Cronjé, who was cited following a yellow card for a dangerous tackle during his team’s 46-10 Currie Cup victory over the Boland Cavaliers last Friday.

He appeared before judicial officer Dekker Govender and was represented at the hearing by his legal representative Darren Croxford.

The Judicial Officer reviewed the available evidence and the report of the match citing commissioner Edwin van Wyngaardt, who felt that the offence deserved a sterner punishment that just a 10-minute sin-binning.

Govender concluded that Cronjé was guilty of a dangerous tackle and as a result, suspended the Sharks flyhalf from all rugby for one week up until Friday, July 24.

Cronjé, who has the right to appeal, will thus miss the Round Three encounter with the Blue Bulls in Durban on Friday.

This blow comes in the wake of the news that Argentinean World Cup flyhalf Juan Martin Hernandez will arrive in Durban too late in the week for consideration for the Sharks' encounter with the Bulls.

Although the Pumas pivot is en route to Durban from Argentina via Paris, where he stopped over to tie up his affairs at his now former club Stade Francais, he is only expected in Durban by Thursday.

Hernandez was held up by work permit bureaucracy, but that has now been solved and the 28-year-old Pumas flyhalf, who often also play in the centre, is likely to make his debut for the Sharks against the Cheetahs next week.
