Stormers head coach Rassie Erasmus this week admitted that he had made some errors in his first two seasons in charge, but promised Cape fans a "more balanced" team that will challenge for overall honours in 2010.
Addressing the media at an information session at Newlands earlier this week, Erasmus said the pieces of the puzzle are now beginning to fall into place.
"I'm the first one to admit I've made a few mistakes in certain aspects of the game," Erasmus said.
"I have learnt a lot from Allister [Coetzee, the Western Province Currie Cup coach and Stormers assistant coach].
"His man-management of players is better," Erasmus said, as Coetzee nodded in appreciation.
"Going into my third year, we've had to make a few interesting moves to get to the management team and the players we have now," Erasmus said.
"It took us a year-and-a-half to get Matthew Proudfoot [the forwards coach], but we have him now and he is doing a wonderful job.
"Getting Allister into a position where he manages the players, the way he manages them now - it took some fine planning and taking a few knocks.
"We are going into next year pretty close to where I wanted us to be - with momentum, experienced players and a confident team," Erasmus added.
Both Erasmus and Coetzee said that the team will take a lot of momentum into the Super 14, from the Currie Cup, despite their heart-breaking 19-21 loss to the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup semifinal last Saturday.
In fact the Stormers pair were buoyed by the fact that they the Bulls to the wire in the semifinal, considering the same team - with 14 players who started - put 60 points past the Chiefs in the Super 14 Final earlier in the year.
The one area of the game they have been hard at work on, is to find that balance between an expansive and a controlled kicking game.
"We will always strive for that balance," Erasmus said, adding: "We don't want to be a team that just kick the ball or just run the ball.
"Allister got very close to it these last four-five [Currie Cup] games and that is what we're striving towards, getting that perfect things - which a team like the Bulls maybe have already."

Got something to say?
